CATIA and SOLIDWORKS are both parametric modelers, but the two main differentiators for CATIA would be higher-level surfacing capabilities and better able to handle very large assemblies.
CATIA V5 is similar to most 3D CAD packages in working with other CAD packages. You are typically transferring files back and forth via STEP or Iges so the models are represented as dumb featureless solids/surfaces.
 
STEP and Iges files are the preferred file types for importing into CATIA V5. SOLIDWORKS Premium has the capability of opening up direct CATIA V5 files.

CATIA V6 has evolved into 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA now. 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA is a major upgrade to CATIA V5 that includes an all new modern user interface and fully integrates on-cloud/on-premise PLM. We recommend 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA for new users since it is better adapted for modern CAD and data management, remote work, interdepartmental collaboration, and other business concerns of today.

For those with background in other 3D CAD modellers the learning curve is fairly short. It is a matter of learning different terminology for certain functions, the order of how to perform those functions and where to find those commands, but the overall concept of 3D design is similar across most 3D CAD software.

We would say it is not quite as user-friendly as SOLIDWORKS so there might be some initial frustration, but after recognising those differences one can progress quickly.
